It’s time for Ministry Mythbusters once again!
Myth #8: If I don’t do it, it won’t get done.
If we are being honest (which is a supreme Christian trait, btw), this “myth” is partially true in certain situations. And the fear is often, if it doesn’t get done by someone else, I should have done it anyway. “I’m creating more work for myself in the future if I don’t do it myself first.”
Here are a few thoughts to consider:
1. If you don’t do it, should it be done by someone else? Should it be done at all?
2. If you do it, are you robbing someone else the privilege of meeting a need, filling a gap, growing their skill set or faith, or obeying God to move into a new role or opportunity?
3. Does God expect you to do it to your own peril or exhaustion?
Not every good idea is a God idea.
Your time is your seed. Sow it wisely. Not everything is do or die, even if someone in the church makes you feel like it is. Not every good idea is a God idea. Make a fresh commitment as you review your calendars for the remainder of this year that you will pray before you commit. If some of your daily, weekly, or monthly tasks need to be off-ramped, ask God to show you how to do that, one at a time, with grace and sensitivity to those it will impact. You can trust the God who called you to guide you every step of the way.
Let’s renew personal sanctuary.
